What are you willing to give up to reach your goals?

We all know how it goes; in order to get something you have to give something in return or give up something for that matter. It’s the way we keep order and balance in our world both individually and holistically. Think about New Year’s resolutions as an example; most people want to lose weight but in order to do so they have to give up whatever it is that is hindering them from reaching that goal. Ok so that was an easy example… what about something more intangible? Let say you want to be better at work, or better at your sport of choice, or maybe you want to learn more about renewable energy (random topic), each and every one of those things will require time and as a result you will need to give up something that is taking up that time so you can achieve your goal, thus order and balance will need to be preserved. So I ask you, what are you willing to give up for your goals? Any real pursuit will require some sort of sacrifice. I think the hardest part is finding the right balance in the end, personally my goal of qualifying for Boston will require multiple sacrifices; time, money, beer, etc.… yes I said beer. You have to give something up to get something in return. In my case I’m willing to give up those empty calories, those refreshing and delicious empty calories to shave a few seconds off my average pace, and believe me it actually works…
I urge you to take a look at your life, make an inventory of things and make a call on what you are willing to forsake in your personal pursuit…

Week 11 went a little like this;

Time has forced me to run on the hamster wheel (treadmill) a lot this week and honestly I don’t like it. But we have to adjust and make sacrifices where needed… Recovery run today is 3.60miles 30:52. I have a plan for next month, it’s going to involve a lot of indoor running but I’ve done it before to get faster…

Back on the treadmill again today, trying to make the most of it by breaking in my new headphones and really putting them through the ringer… The plan calls for two runs today but I know that’s not going to happen, I’ve got too much going on with work and the kids. 3.67miles in 30:03 is going to be it for today

Well like I said another day on the wheel… this time a bit longer and a little further. 4.90miles in 40:01. Sticking to the plan as much as possible so today’s run was a make-up run for yesterday.

Today is a rest day, but I need to get ready for a race on Saturday so I need to get some miles in not to mention that I need to make up for the missed run earlier this week. Back on the road 6.21miles in 48:31 I’m loving the cooler weather, it allows me to work on my negative splits.

Today is a rest day!

Took the kids out to the trail today, we went for 5miles in 44:15. Pushing the 3 year old in the jogging stroller is no joke, talk about cross training. Taking it easy the rest of the day, I have to work a race event uptown, which should be fun.

So I have a decision to make here today. I have a 15k race I also have a 20mile run on the schedule. I can run the race and then go out for another 11 miles or I can run the race and swap long runs with next Sunday’s which is considerably shorter… I chose to race and give it my best 9.3miles 1:09:35. Also got to rock my new socks #bringit4braylon

Starting today 10/1 I will not have any beer or celebratory alcoholic beverages until after the Charlotte Marathon on 11/11. I’m hoping that the availability of such beverages be limited… last time I gave up beer for a month before a race I was invited to at least half a dozen events where booze of all kinds was always included! Nothing better to test your resolve than to put the temptation and arms reach at every corner… What are you giving up?
